How Models Make Us Fat March 30, 2009

Yes, this does make me want to eat. A lot.

Yes, this does make me want to eat. A lot.

And this is why I, as a former fat kid, advise against putting pictures of Gisele on the fridge as motivation. Although looking up to models might motivate you to throw away that box of cookies, it can also create extreme behaviors that lead to “binge dieting and the kind of unhealthy eating habits that ultimately result in weight gain, not loss, ” according to this article from Newsweek. And not to mention hunger imagining the starvation that some of these models might be experiencing.

Although we all know that “as American women have gotten heavier, models have gotten thinner and taller,” I had no idea that not only ded models 25 years ago weigh only “8 percent less” than the average woman, but models ten years ago averaged at around 5 feet 5 inches in height.

Well, that explains the new Top Model, which I’m surprised health experts haven’t commented on as much as they could-I mean, wouldn’t promoting a show for “short” models just lead to an even higher number of young women starving themselves? It seems healthier knowing that being a model is impossible based on height alone, though that Cover Girl contract does look tasty..I mean, um..okay, I’m going to lunch now.

This is your kitchen on detox.

This is your kitchen on detox.

Put the forty bucks for organic maple syrup back in your wallet. Dr. Patricia Fitzgerald from the Huffington Post gives a sensible approach to detox. While it’s true that we are exposed to more toxins than before, sustaining on cranberry juice for a week and a half might not be the best way to rid yourself of toxins, which your body is already doing for you all the time anyway. It’s boring, but the best approach is just to eat healthy on a regular basis (ie, ask for more tomatoes in your fresco burrito at Taco Bell).

Try putting the pills aside and breathing. And let me know how that feels.

Try putting the pills aside and breathing. And let me know how that feels.

Now that the economy sucks and most of us can’t afford ridiculous organic lemon and maple syrup diets and CLA pills, we’re going to need a lot of this kind of detox from Natural Health Magazine. The tips on controlling anxiety are especially relevant for anyone who gets daily phone calls from her mother with information on  jobless statistics, Anderson Cooper’s latest ensemble and the latest news on how Pakistan will start WWIII.

Somebody needs more sympathetic friends.

Somebody needs more sympathetic friends.

I usually think slouching in my computer chair is what gives me aches in my left butt cheek, but “How Your Body Reveals How You Feel” has some other ideas. Sophie Keller explains what your body could be telling you about your emotional and mental state through aches, stiffness and other maladies. If you have a backache, for example, it could represent a need for greater emotional support, or an arm ache  could be a need to “reach out to others” (and nerd pause: why is arm ache two words and backache one?)

Since I got in a car accident recently, I’m not completely sure about this. My backache probably has more to do with my seat belt blocking my head from reaching the airbag. But at the same time, I’ve heard New Age-y types say that accidents are often just unreleased stress, and then add to that a friend mentioning to me that I was being a bit complacent in my life lately, and perhaps I just needed a jolt. Like, literally. I also should add that it might just be fun to have a new car, and perhaps I had wished for one in my sleep and voila- another near-death fiasco gave me one!

But really, Sophie Keller’s suggestions got me thinking of some things-like my use of Girl Scout cookies to feel “nourished” or my need for  human connection beyond the internet, especially for the sake of free back rubs.

Pushing that desk around could also burn a few calories.

Pushing that desk around could also burn a few calories.

Addicted to the internet but still concerned about how flat your butt might be getting after spending 16 hours a day in the same chair/bed? Sustaining on a diet of Cheetos and cucumber water because mouse-clicking can only burn so many calories? We have just what you need.

“Workouts on the Web” from the Los Angeles Times provides information on where to get work out videos online and for free. Selections include exercise.tv, which provides videos of different lengths depending on level and yogajournal.com, where you can learn from certified instructors.

Or you could just continue carrying your laptop every where you go, although I  doubt the toilet is that far from  your desk.

How to Eat Girl Scout Cookies Without Risking Your Life March 14, 2009

Four dollars for your life, please.

For just four dollars a pop, you too can stimulate the economy with your future medical bills.

It’s that time of year again. Time for America’s emergency rooms to be stuffed with victims of Girl Scout Cookie Disorder, symptoms of which include an aching tummy and an inability to look at sugar for longer than five seconds for three days in a row (believe me, I’m an expert at this).

If you’re like me, you will risk your life and snatch that box of Peanut Butter Patties as soon as the Girl Scout puts it down to give her latest victim 50 cents in change. And once you’ve sped off in your car, you will proceed to eat half the box and then make plans to share it with your coworkers after realizing that just two cookies have about 6 grams of saturated fat.

But alas, I have a solution for this mess. It’s called moderation, and it doesn’t work for me, but it might work for you. But you might be wondering just how many Girl Scout cookies you can eat in moderation considering the high saturated fat content. For this, I lead you to Fitnessforweightloss.com, where you can calculate how many grams of saturated fat (the bad bad BAD kind) you can have per day (if you insist). According to this, I should have stopped at about four cookies. See you in the ER.

For once, our government is doing something just in time. As part of the bailout package that was passed on Friday, insurers will now have to provide equal treatment for both physical and mental health services. My, my, those Washington folks sure are clever. Just put us all on some drugs and maybe we’ll forget about all this soon enough, right? Ooh look…a birdie just flew in my window!! Dont laugh. Have you watched the news lately?

Don't judge. Have you watched the news lately?

For those of you who don’t have health insurance or just have a serious case of internet addiction, avoiding the doctor’s office is probably a part of everyday life. You probably wash your hands more than a hypochondriac, drive at a steady 30 miles per hour while avoiding most highways,  and take enough vitamin C to create a tangerine-colored halo around you that combats germs even from the diviest of dive bars. Oh..is that just me?

Anywho, many Americans will be joining your club sometime soon, and “Recession-Proof Your Health”  from Your Total Health provides some tips on the correct way to deal with the government screwing you over. The most important piece of advice? Don’t Panic!!!!!!
