The worst thing about the impending doom we Americans are facing is that it started showing itself right after summer was over. So there’s no laying out by the pool to escape the barrage of news screaming “Crisis!” or “Voter Fraud!” or “Palin!”

This week’s cocktail selection takes us back to the good old days, or basically a month ago, so say your final goodbye to the summer time with some Malibu rum-inspired Bayou Juice (webtender.com)

Friday Evening Cocktail: Bailout Edition October 3, 2008

Since we’re on the theme of being broke, I thought this week’s cocktail could also be a little more economical and, incidentally, more effective.

Nothing says ‘effective cocktail’ like Popov, the mother of all dorm room vodkas and Saturday afternoon walks of shame. As a tribute to the big economic bailout, let’s go back to our college days when we would pretended Popov took pain away instead of provided more just because it had a $5.99 price tag. But this time, we’ll be more methodical with our recipes and avoid the Hawaiian Punch.

This week’s Recipe: Cranberry Vodka Slush (via drinksmixer.com)

Rest easy, Palin- it's not really Russian.

4 cups water
12 oz frozen lemonade concentrate
6 oz frozen cranberry juice
1 cup sugar
1 bottle Popov® vodka

Mix all ingredients a day ahead and place in freezer. When ready to serve, take out of freezer and scoop and serve with ginger ale, if desired.*

Editor’s note: ‘If desired’ my ass. Have plenty of ginger ale handy.

Anyone who needs free therapy should also enjoy a good Friday evening cocktail. Therefore, I’ve created this section to help you ease into the weekend while impressing your friends with unique concoctions.

This week’s selection is the Caribbean Champagne. It’s a while until summer ends, so you can still serve drinks with any kind of island reference without looking sissier than your Grandma’s tablecloth.

Caribbean Champagne (from drinksmixer.com)

1/2 tsp white rum
1/2 tsp creme de bananes
5 1/2 oz chilled Champagne
Pour the white rum and creme de bananes into a champagne flute. Fill with champagne, and stir lightly. Garnish with a slice of banana, and serve.
